The main tribes in the mission were the Chumash and the Tongva.  The Chumash tribe had a larger population in the mission than the Tongva.

The Chumash were skilled craftsmen who could weave beautiful blankets out of feathers.  They made baskets and built canoes, made leather goods and ironwork.  All were sold in Los Angeles.

A typical day at the mission would start with the morning Mass and then everyone over the age of nine started their chores.  They worked long hours without rest.

They have sought Federal Recognition for decades.
